In 2004-2005 a group of business, government, community, education and not-for-profit leaders undertook a landmark comprehensive community assessment of the entire eight-county Chattahoochee Valley Region, including Columbus/Muscogee County, Chattahoochee, Harris, Marion, Russell (AL), Stewart, Talbot and Taylor Counties.
Presented to the communities in the spring of 2005, the assessment identifies and clarifies the human services needs of each county and the Region and any gaps/overlaps that exist between the needs of the communities and the resources available to meet them. Over 3,700 Chattahoochee Valley Region residents participated in the assessment through town hall meetings, interviews, e-surveys, high school government class surveys, a random dial telephone survey, and a homeless point-in-time survey. Demographic and economic data were analyzed and compared to local perceptions and to national and state benchmarks.
The report and the data accompanying it provide an overview of the most significant issues for the Region and for each individual county. Together, they provide rational, objective, defensible, community-driven priorities for each area to optimize local strategic planning efforts and make wise use of available resources in meeting the human services needs of the Region.
Since its release, the report has been used by city and county governments to direct programs and by nonprofits across the area -- including United Way -- to guide its programmatic and grantmaking agendas. Most recently the report has sparked an initiative to help Muscogee County develop a long-range plan to reduce poverty: the Building Prosperity Initiative.
The Community Foundation was proud for its executive director to be a member of the project Steering Committee and to have been able to help sponsor the project through a grant from its Community Endowment Fund.
