One of the highlights of this year's report -- besides the great stories about how people are using the Community Foundation to help them leave a legacy -- is a group photograph that offers a microcosm of the lives that are touched by our organization. 

We hope you'll enjoy learning a little more about each of the individuals in the photo, below:

1-3Dorothy McDaniel, Anne King & Ashley Smith, Trees ColumbusThe CFCV provided more than $60,000 in Donor-Advised Fund grants to this young organization in 2009, helping support their efforts to “plant, preserve and protect Columbus’ urban tree canopy” and thereby contribute to a healthy, beautiful and vibrant community.
4Mike Venable, CFCV BoardAn area entrepreneur and community activist, Venable is passionate about the ways in which information is shared in the Chattahoochee Valley.  His involvement on the board of the CFCV, currently as its Immediate Past President, spurs thoughtful board discussion about the CFCV’s role as a Center for Thoughtful Philanthropy.
5Larry Heisler, CFCV StaffThe CFCV’s controller, who helps make sure our finances are impeccable, couldn’t resist joining the group in support of our impact across the community!
6, 10-12Scott Ferguson, Becky Fletcher, Candace Poole, Rachel Williams, United Way of the Chattahoochee ValleyThis important center for human service needs in our community recently reached 103% of its annual fundraising goal, in part with contributions of $142,000 from the CFCV Donor-Advised Funds.  We’re proud to partner with this United Way and with others in our service area to research, communicate and help meet community needs.
7Royce Ard, West Georgia Honor FlightThis local head of Knology also volunteers countless hours of time as the hub director for West Georgia Honor Flight.  The group uses the West Georgia Honor Flight Fund at the CFCV to provide financial and administrative support for this community-wide effort to fly WWII Veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit the WWII Memorial at no cost to the Veterans.
8Kerry Hand, CFCV Board, Claud A. Sears Family Fund, CFCVAfter 35 years as an AFLAC executive, Hand retired and has become more involved in the community, including serving as a Commission of the Columbus airport.  He sees his involvement with the CFCV as a way to positively impact the broader community and serves as the Vice President of the Board.  He and his wife, Donna, are also advisors to the Claud A. Sears Family Fund at the CFCV.
9Cecil Cheves, CFCV BoardThe Columbus attorney and CFCV 2010 Board Chair celebrated his 60th birthday in 2009 in grand style by running 60 miles, biking 60 miles and swimming 60 laps in 24 hours to help raise awareness for the West Georgia Honor Flight Fund at the CFCV.
13-15, 20, 50Sandi Hortman, Kim Jenkins, Marlon Sharpe Daryl Brown and Helen Johnson, Open Door Community HouseIn addition to the more than $50,000 it received in 2010 grants from various CFCV funds, Open Door staff partnered with others, including CFCV Executive Director Betsy Covington, in community-wide efforts like the Building Prosperity Initiative to develop a long-range plan to reduce poverty and the Homelessness Task Force to end long-term homelessness.

Elder and Mrs. Bobby Harris, The House of Mercy

The Executive Director of the House of Mercy, Elder Harris has confidence that the Community Foundation’s careful stewardship of the House of Mercy’s Endowment Fund at the CFCV will support his organization’s work “to help the unconditional love of Jesus Christ transform lives.”
18, 34, 35J.J. Musgrove, George Del Gobbo, Lauren Murray, Columbus Symphony OrchestraFounded in 1855, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra was the third orchestra formed in the U.S.  Today, the organization receives essential public support via two endowed funds at the CFCV, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra Rental Fund (to help pay the costs of performing in the RiverCenter) and the Columbus Symphony Orchestra Endowment Fund.  Also, in 2009 the Symphony received more than $51,000 in grants from Donor-Advised Funds.
19Bill Bullock, RiverCenter for the Performing ArtsThe RiverCenter Facilities Endowment Fund at the CFCV helps this jewel in our community support the cost of operating its facility.  And that’s no small thing:  With five stories, 200 miles of wiring, 150,000 feet of conduit, six million pounds of structural steel, one million masonry blocks, 300,000 bricks, and 50 million pounds of concrete, RiverCenter represents a massive investment in our community’s arts & cultural district.

Paul Pierce, Springer Opera House, and Springer Theatre Academy Students (in numerical order) Lloyd David, Callie Hampton, Joseph Goldman, Tori Griggs

The Springer’s innovative approach to teaching “life skills through stage skills” has sparked a renaissance of youth and adult participation for this growing regional theater.  CFCV grants of more than $76,000 from its Knight Fund are helping the Springer analyze and market its success.  In addition, 2009 brought the Springer an additional $114,700 in grants from CFCV Donor-Advised Funds.

Rose Steiner, The Rose Hurt Steiner Fund, CFCV

Recently settled in our community, Steiner uses her Donor-Advised Fund at the CFCV to support organizations that kindle her passion for art, gardens, music and historic preservation.

Will Burgin, Jackson-Burgin, Inc.

As the owner of Jackson Square, the Village on 13th and other redeveloped local properties, Burgin’s company believes that investment in a community’s built environment elevates society as a whole.  The CFCV is proud to support in-town revitalization work with its presence, establishing its office in the Village on 13th  in 2007.

Bob Robbins, Tiffany Spicer  with Gabby the Boxer, Marnee Stallone with Brunhilda the Chihuahua, PAWS Humane

CFCV Donor-Advised Fund Grants to PAWS Humane’s capital campaign, spay/neuter programs and therapy dog projects help extend and improve life for countless animals in our community – along with their new owners.  (Note:  since this photo was made, Brunhilda has been adopted.  At press time, Gabby the Boxer was still looking for the perfect home.)

Virginia Peebles and Candice Wayman, The Coalition for Sound Growth

Through funding from the Coalition for Sound Growth Fund at the CFCV, this fledgling effort brings together an alliance of individuals, businesses and organizations for education and advocacy to help the Columbus community respond thoughtfully to its growth opportunities.
33, 46, 47, 48, 49 Representatives from Girls Inc.

Girls Inc.’s wonderful mission of “inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold” received strong support from Donor-Advised Funds at the CFCV in 2009, with $165,062

 in grants being made to the organization.
36-39Jeff Jones, Erica Valentine, Lauren Johnson and Bryan Elder, Young LifeGrants totaling $37,516 from various Donor-Advised Funds at the CFCV last year helped support Young Life’s efforts to share God’s presence with teenagers.
40Silvia Bunn, Mildred Terry Library, Chattahoochee Valley Regional Library SystemA former board member of the CFCV and the longtime branch manager of the Mildred Terry Library, Bunn is enthusiastic about the three funds that the Muscogee County Library Foundation has created at the CFCV to manage its endowment assets, maximizing investment return on the gifts given by area residents to help the Library reach its goal of “becoming the best public library in America.”
40, 42Mark Strunk and Pat Killough, Pastoral InstituteThe Pastoral Institute offers counseling, consulting and educational resources to care for the emotional, relational and spiritual needs of individuals, families and communities.  Donor-Advised Fund grants from the CFCV in 2009 helped provide $350,435 in support of the Pastoral Institute’s programs and capital campaign.

Turkeisha Fogle, the 2008 Smith Scholar, The James Henry Smith and Gladys Manning Smith Scholarship Fund, CFCV

As the first recipient of the James Henry Smith and Gladys Manning Smith Scholarship, Fogle receives funds each semester that enable her to attend Columbus State University, provide an apartment home for herself and her toddler son, and continue toward her dream of becoming a high school math teacher.
