The Amyothrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association of Georgia, Inc.
(ALSA of GA) "Lou Gehrig's disease"

1955 Cliff Valley Way, Suite 116
Atlanta, GA  30329
(404) 636-9909

Contact: Mary Lyons, Development Director
                alsaga-mary@earthlink.net

Tax ID Number:  58-1943490

Mission:  Provides and coordinates services to patients and families affected by ALS ("Lou Gehrig's disease") and supports education, advocacy and research.  ALSA of GA is the only Georgia organization solely dedicated to the needs of ALS patients and their families.  The Association fills the gap between what is commonly provided by insurance and other organizations, and services and equipment that are not available but that are critical to ALS patients.

About Us:

  • County:  Atlanta (serves entire state)
  • Year Began Operations in Chattahoochee Valley:  1988
  • County(ies) served within the Chattahoochee Valley:  All counties
  • Website Address:  www.alsaga.org
  • For more information, visit: www.guidestar.org  and search using the organization's Tax ID Number, listed above

Need 1:  Respite Card Program Funding
Monthly reimbursement to allow 6-8 families to hire a qualified caregiver for a period of rest.  Respite Program is critical to families caring for ALS patients.  The disease restricts muscle movement and often leaves patients paralyzed.  24-hour care is required, usually by family members.  Caregivers must be trained in the unique care requirements of ALS patients and understand that, though a patient often cannot move or communicate, their minds remain sharp and alert.

Total Project Cost: $100 per month, up to $1,200 per family a year

Requested:  $8,000 to fund 6-8 families; any amount would be appreciated

Need 2:  Augmentative Communication systems for patients with ALS
Laptop computers, switches and software are used to allow patients with ALS to communicate with those around them.  The AugCom staffperson travels the state to tailor equipment to each patient.  Computers, software and switches allow patients to program messages that "speak for them" through the use of advanced software systems.  Patients key daily phrases into computers by utilizing switches that attach to any muscles that have movement on their body (eye, hand, foot) as the disease progresses.

Total Project Cost: $2,000 per system (laptop, software, switches)

Requested:  $8,000 to fund 4 systems; any amount would be appreciated

Need 3:  Family and Children's Counseling
Reimburses families for counseling when they have no other method to obtain services.  Particularly valuable for children as they struggle to assist with the care of a disabled patient.  Also helps family members who are unable to express their feelings as spouses and parents lose their ability to move and speak.  Counseling is invaluable to help families grieve after the loss of their loved one (ALS is always fatal, with many patients living less than five years following a confirmed diagnosis of the disease).

Total Project Cost: Up to $200 per session, per family

Requested:  $8,000; any amount would be appreciated
